Johnston, Ian. “On Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude.” Johnstonia. May 1999.27 March 2007 <http://www.mala.bc.ca/~johnstoi/introser/marquez.HTM>.

This article was about five diffent topics. Since I am doing my paper on magical realism I chose to look at the section that consisted of magical realism. The author claims that the "comedic" side of the book is interesting and it leaves the reader wanting more. Johnston gives various examples of how the story is comedic. Johnston claims that the town of Macondo is not real at all, it is all magical. He claims that we receive no mental picture of it. Lastly the magical realism keeps us "on edge." I truly agree with Johnston on this, as the reader, I was always "expecting the unexpected."

Simpkins, Scott. “Magical Strategies: The Supplement of Realism.” Twentieth CenturyLiterature. 34.2(1988): 140-154.JSTOR. St. Xavier U. Chicago, IL. 27 March 2007<http://links.jstor.org/>

This author talks basically of the times when magical realism took place. In other words it gives specifics. He also claims that what seems real to us is abnormal to the inhabitants of Macondo and vice versa. He alsom compares the magical realism to that of other great works, ones I've never read.

Hart, Stephen M. "Magical Realism in the Americas: Politicised Ghosts in One Hundred Years of Solitude , The House of the Spirits , and Beloved."Vol.9.2 (2003): 115-123
Academic Search Premier. Loyola U Lib. Chicago, IL. 29 March 2007

This author focuses not only on the town of Macondo, but of the actual magical acts. Hart states that what we would consider abnormal in this world, as Hart refers to it, "First World" is normal to them. What we se as normal is abnormal to them. The author of this article goes to Marquez's history to explain his motives for the magical realism. He goes even further, by explaining why Marquez used that magical realism. Hart, overall, compares One Hundred Years of Solitude with two other books.

The author review the specifics of magicla realism. It says that it is more as a fantasy thatn realism. The author goes in depth in that side of the sprectrum. He feels that the magical realism was very necessary to the plot of the story he claims that the magicla realism brought out who the charcters really were. Lastly it kept the reader entertained.

Play and Playfulness in García Márquez' "One Hundred Years of Solitude"

This author claims it to be funny and "playful" as the title of the article suggests. It goes a little more in depth than the others.

Brooks, Gary. Literature Board Games. 1997.A to Z Teacher Stuff. March 29, 2007< http://www.atozteacherstuff.com/pages/487.shtml>

We really didn't use this website at all. It did not help us in ANY form or manner. We thought of our own plans. We did not need a website. Well this plan consisted of making a board game. After reading the book, the students have to remember the adventures of the protagonists. This will help students remember important themes and scenes of the book. We thought of a similar idea. In the sense that we also thought of a game. Let us remind you that we did not need this website, we thought of it on our own, but we conclude that this could have been a good idea as well.

The Project.2007. Founding Principles. March 29,2007 <http://www.favoritepoem.org/theproject/index.html>

This website provided us with absolutely nothing. We just used this website because it was required. We did not think of doing a poem at all, it did not even cross our mind, but here it is. Imaginary Use: We incorporated the thoughts of this website along with ours, it was an awesome website!! A poem WOULD HAVE been a good idea, but we went along with our own ideas. We were creative and thought of such things as a mobile or powerpoint.

MEANINGFUL PASSAGE JOURNAL

A meaningful passage in the book is when Aureliano and Amaranta Ursula experience love. They expericence love throughout chapters nineteen and twenty.

" Since the afternoon of their first love, Aureliano and Amaranta Ursula had continued taking advantage of her husband's rare unguarded moments, making love with gagged ardor in chance meetings and almost always interrupted by unexpected returns. But when they saw themselves alone in the house they succumbed to the delirium of lovers who were making up for lost time. It was mad passion, unhinging, which made Fernanda's bones tremble with horror in her grave and which kept them in a state of perpetual excitement...they lost their sense of reality, the notion of time, the rhythm of daily habits...and both of them remained floating in an empty universe where the only everyday and eternal reality was love."

Nothing absolutely nothing could diminish the love they had for each other. Their house was falling apart, but they did not care. They were very poor and very hungry, but that just strengthened their love. The fact that Amaranta Ursula was married did not stop them, they just simply did their mischevious acts behind his back. Lastly, the fact that they knew they were related did not stop them from loving each other in that manner. This is a really meaningful passage because this is the first form of love within the family. I'm not saying it's the correct way to love a family member but it was the first form of love that ws present between two family members. I know that Amaranta really loved her brother Colonel Aureliano Buendia, but he didn't even care for her that much, he didn't even love her. In the case of Aureliano and Amaranta Ursula the love was returned by both parties. Going even further they had the first child that was created out of true love. The baby that they had was the last Buendia and he died the way Melquiades' had predicted. If the baby had not died I guess the Buendias would have kept on living, or Marquez would have had to create a different ending. Perhaps an alternate ending could have been naming the child what Amaranta Ursula had wanted, Rodrigo. So does that mean that true love had to occur to end the miserable solitude of the Buendias? And supposedly Macondo and the solitude of the Buendia's is supposed to be wiped out of memory when Aureliano finishes reading the parchment, is that literally true? If not, won't Aurelino be living in solitude again?

CONNECTION JOURNAL

One of the main themes in One Hundred Years of Solitude is identity and the search for it. We can connect this with another work of literature. Identity is major theme in Don Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes as well. In Don Quixote, Don Quixote creates his own identity and believes he is truly what he imagines he is. He is so convinced that he is a knight, that he convinces others he is a knight. He applies to what he has read in fictious books to the real world, and that helps him develop his identity. Since he thinks he is a knight he forces himself to play and follow that role.
In One Hundred Years of Solitude each persons' identity is based on the ancestor who has the same name. For example all of the Jose Arcadios have to be strong and tall. While all the Aurelianos have to be passive and engaged in Melquiades' parchements. The family already knew that they had to act the way the other Jose Arcadios and Aurelianos acted, it was expected of them. In other words each character is bound to an identity, they do not have their own. The author illustrates this by giving the characters the same names. Another example can be Amaranta Ursula, the author says that she is small just like Ursula. Amaranta Ursula has that name already and she has to act like Ursula, depriving Amaranta Ursula of her own identity.
The only difference between Don Quixote and One Hundred Years of Solitude is that in Don Quixote, Don Quixote gives himself his title. Whereas in One Hundred Years of Solitude the characters titles are given to them. All in all the connection is pretty solid. Don Quixote and all the characters in One Hundred Years of Solitude have a title they have to fulfill. They fulfill it and by doing that they are deprived of their own natural identity. We never truly find out what each character would have been like if they did not have designated titles.
One Hundred Years of Solitude can also be connected with The Fall of the House of Usher. This may sound a little weird, because The Fall of the House of Usher is a "horror story" and One Hundred Years of Solitude is not. The connection traces back to identity. In The Fall of the House of Usher, Roderick Usher's identity is that of his sister. In a sense their identities are overlapping and the same but they are two different people. They are overlapping because Roderick sleeps right above the vault where Madeline is in and he dies on top of Madeline. The two characters act the same and even look the same, even though one is a male and one is a female. Like in One Hundred Years of Solitude, the characters all act and look like their family members, but of course are different people. Roderick and Madeline have the same identity and the characters in One Hundred Years of Solitude have the same identity of their family members.

REFLECTIVE 3

I'm finally done with the book. I thought it was a great book. On a scale of one to ten I give it a ten. The saddest part was when Meme was taken to a hospital. At that moment I just wanted someone to go save her or for like Aureliano Segundo to kill Fernanda or something!!!Poor Meme all she wanted to do was be with Mauricio. Another sad part was when Ursula was dying, I felt bad for her because Amaranta Ursula and Aureliano would treat her as if she were a toy or already dead. After all she did and after all she experienced in the end no one knew her or no one even cared about her. As I wrote the latter statement I realized that everything we do in our lifetime will be pointless. In the sense that if someone is knowledgeable, adventurous, lazy, generous, loving, rich or poor in the end it doesn't matter because we are all going to die. The Buendia family is a perfect example of this. I know it's only a story but after much thought it's true we live for nothing.
All in all this is one of the best books I have ever read. I will take it upon myself to read more books by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

ACTIVE READING PART 3

ACTIVE READING CHAPTER ELEVEN
MAGICAL REALISM

When the father of Fernanda came in a bolted chest. He was "dressed in black and with a crucifix on his chest, his skin broken out in pestilential sores and cooking slowly in a frothy stew with bubbles like live pearls."

This is impossible because how could that "frothy stew" be boiling even after it's been mailed and shipped?

The fact that Aureliano Centeno created sherbert. This is getting out of hand, I believe, because they don't since when did they have sherbert? I don't get it! They didn't even have names for everything that existed, but now they have their own Baskin 31??

QUOTES

"Remedios the Beauty to put on a pair of men's pants and climb a greased pole..."

I thought this was hilarious. She is in her own home and she is the most beautiful and respected, but now everyone just treats her like nothing. This also reminds me of this one episode of the Simpsons.

" ' ...the grandson of a saint and the son of a queen of a rustler' "

The fact that Ursula show some humor is quite funny. She hasn't shown any humor, or anyone from the book has shown any humor.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

In this chapter we find out about Fernanda's life story. She once lived like a queen and was the granddaughter of a real queen. Her mother once told her, "we are immensely rich and powerful...one day you will be a queen.'" The horrible part is the Fernanda believed her, she had hight hopes becoming queen and "she dreamed of her legendary kingdom." She really didn't know that her father Don Fernando was in debt, so Aureliano Segundo had to come and get her. When he went to the town where Fernanda lived he searched high and low for the most beautiful woman there, which was her. He then married her. When they were married Fernanda would not take off a long robe. She said she was waiting two weeks to be with her husband.

PLOT SUMMARY

The chapter starts off with a brief account of Fernanda's life story. We are told that she used to be the granddaughter of a queen. She then is found by Aureliano Segundo and he marries her. Her life is then changed dramatically. She is no longer the prestigious daughter of a queen. In fact even Ursula and Aureliano Seguando crack a joke behind her back.
Later on in the chapter, Aureliano's seventeen children show up. They are grown men and they destroy the house. Ursula and Amaranta do not even know what to do with the situation at hand.
Later on one of Aureliano's kids Aureliano Triste goes to a house, which he thinks is abandoned and he finds Rebecca withered and old. Everyone had thought that she was dead
but she was not.

THEMES
Lost hopes- When Fernanda marries Aureliano Segundo, she had always thought that she would be a queen, but in the end she lived miserably.

Jealousy- When Fernanda finds out that Aureliano gave Pietra her dress, and she dressed up as queen, Fernanda get jealous and runs away.

CHAPTER TWELVE

MAGICAL REALISM

When the sons of Colonel Aureliano Buendia went to mass on ash wednesday four of the sons' ashes did not wipe off, while the others did. That is magical realism because why wouldn't they wash off the other ones?

The fact that many men have died with just the sight of Remedios the Beauty is magical realism because how can people just die with that site of a beautiful woman?

QUOTES

" When he saw Mr. Brown in the first automobile to reach Macondo-an orange convertible with a horn that frightened dogs with its bark"

This quote jumps up at me because it goes back to the idea that nothing had a name and now they have all kinds of cool cars. Also, I think it's horrible that the "gringos" have come and they want to take over Macondo.

"The whole town saw the decapitated mand pass by as a group of men carried him to his house, with a woman dragging the head along by its hair, and the bloody sack with the pieces of the child."

This quote may not be important to the plot of the story, but the fact that the "gringos" are heartless jumped up at me. He was only seven years old!

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

In chapter twelve, the town of Macondo has been invaded by "gringos." The town, I guess you could say, has developed in terms of technology. The people, on the other hand, do not see this as an advancement. They see it as an invasion and Colonel Aureliano Buendia is not willing to put up with it. He says "one of these days...I'm going to arm my boys so we can get rid of these shitty 'gringos.' "
According to the inhabitants of Macondo , Macondo is not progressing at all. Aureliano wants to go back to war, to run the "gringos" out.

PLOT SUMMARY

The chapter opens up with the complaints of the people of Macondo. They decided that they do not want to watch the miseries of others while they have their own to take care of. In Macondo a man by the name of Mr. Brown comes and Ursula like always takes him in. Mr. Brown show up in an orange convertable. When he is at the house of the Buendia's he cannot stop eating bananas, he eats bunch after bunch. A few days later when Mr. Brown had left, "a group of engineers, agronomists, hydrologists, topographers, and surveyors arrived who fors everal weeks explored..." The people that came changed everything, they even moved the river from where it had always been and put it with its white stones and icey currents on the other side of town. They claimed to have come to start banana plantations.
Later on in the chapter all of Colonel Aureliano Buendia's son come to Macondo. The chapter then shifts to Remedios the beauty. A total of four men die in this chapter because of her. They try to approach her and they simply die. "The supposition that Remedios the Beauty possessed powers of death wa then brone ou by four irrefutable events."
Once when all seventeen of the brothers had received ashes on ash wednesday, the ashes could not be washed off of four of the brothers. This made Colonel Aureliano Buendia furious. At the end of the chapter he wants war with these "gringos."

THEMES

Death- is a major theme in this chapter because four of Colonel Aureliano Buendia's sons die.

Lust- This is the first time we see lust in the book. For example every man lusts after Remedios the Beauty.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

MAGICAL REALISM

"Fernanda would wander alone among the three living ghosts and the dead ghost of Jose Arcadio Buendia, who at times would come to sit down with an inquisitive attention in the half-light of the parlor while she was playing the clavichord."

This is magical realism because Jose Arcadio Buendia is already dead, and since ghosts do not exist this is magical realism as well.

We find that Jose Arcadio Buendia feels the urine as Aureliano urinates on the chestnut tree. This is magical realism because Jose Arcadio Buendia is dead, so therefore he cannot feel anything.

QUOTES

" 'You have a heart of stone,' she told him."

Ursula is telling this to Aureliano when she sees him burning Remedios' dolls. This quotw jumps up at me because people have told me that I have a heart of stone as well!

" 'How awful!' Fernanda lamented. 'This child is as much of a barbarian as her father!' "

This quote just confirmed my feelings toward Fernanda. Before this I was quite unsure of how I felt about her. I didn't know if she was a good character or a bad one. Now I know hse is awful because she insults her daughter with a passion.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

In this chapte we get an update of how Ursula has been doing. She has finally grown old. I say this because in every other chapter she does not experience any signs of "oldness." Ursula unfortunately turns blind. At first she saw a little bit, but then she put honey on her eyes and that made it a little better. Then it came to the point where she saw nothing at all. She didnt want to tell anyone because then the whole town would know of her uselessness, so she kept it to herself. No one even suspected. She almost didn't even realize that she was blind herself. She was so used to the daily routine, that she knew where everything was. How everyone placed themselves about the house. Lastly she even knew what the people in her hous were going to say. She even knew colors by their textures because Jose Arcadio taught her uknowingly.

PLOT SUMMARY

The chapter starts off with an explanation of Ursula. Ursula has finally aged after many many years. In the meantime Jose Arcadio and Meme are ready to go to the seminary and the convent. Ursula barely realized that she has gone blind. She didn't realize it before because she was so used to everything. For example, "she knew with so much certainty the location of everything that she herself forgot that she was blind at times." Ursula finally came to the conclusion that Colonel Aureliano Buendia never loved anyone, not even his wife Remedios.
She also concluded that Rebecca, who was not even her legitimate daughter, turned out with the "unbridled courage that Ursula had wanted for her line." She realized that this whole time Rebecca was treated unfairly.
Three months later Meme came back to Macondo, and one time she brougth back some of hter classmates and some nuns. At that time Fernanda was already in charge of the house. She and Aureliano Segundo were already having problems so she simply accepted the fact that he slept with Pietra. She wanted him to come home while Meme returned. He accepted these terms and they lived happily like that .
After all this occurs Colonel Aureliano is in an eating contest. He eats so much, and after that Santa Sofia de la Piedad finds him dead near the dumpster.

THEMES

Death- In this chapter death is a major theme as well because finally Colonel Aureliano Buendia dies. He dies a miserable lonely death near a garbage can.

Loneliness-Loneliness is an important theme in this chapter because Colonel is feeling lonely and he burns Remedios' dolls.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

MAGICAL REALISM

The fact that butterflies follow Mauricio Babilonia everywhere. Not only do they follow him, but they follow Meme as well.

Also, the fact that Amaranta knew the exact date of her death because the body of Pilar Ternera told her she would die on that day.

QUOTES

" ' One minute of reconciliation is worth more than a whole life of friendship.' "

This quote was said by Ursula to Amaranta. I don't know if I agree with the statement one hundred percent because a whole life of friendship is worth a bundle if you ask me.

"If anyone seemed alive at that moment it was serene Amaranta, who had even had enough time to cut her corns."

This quote jumps up at me because if I knew the exact date of my death I would seize everyday.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

There are two characters in this chapter that develop the most. Amaranta and Meme.
-Amaranta-Amaranta the woman who was a virgin, who said no to love and who loved her brother the most, finally dies. Poor Amaranta, she loved Pietro Crespi and the General, and she said no to their love. She did some bad things with her nephew Aureliano Jose and with her other nephew who was going to become a priest. She touched him in a manner that only a woman loves a man. She felt bad for it, but it's what kept her from her solitude. After all these years she still had some rancor left towards Rebecca for what happened with Pietro. She wished that Rebecca die before her. Even after all those years Amaranta could not forgive and forget. So it came the day in which she died.
Meme- In chapter thirteen we only find out that Meme went to school so she could learn how to play the clavicord. She would only come back to visit when she time off of school. Once she graduated she came to live with Fernanda. While she was living there she spent a tremendous amount of time with her father Aureliano Segundo. They were each others' confidants. Meme then falls in love with this boy named Mauricio. She was not the party girl we all knew earlier in the chapter, she matured into a woman who is in love.

PLOT SUMMARY

The chapter starts off with Meme returning home from school, she has already "graduated." We learn that Meme is a party girl. She likes to have girlfriends over and she likes to go to friends' houses. "Her happiness lay at the other extreme from discipline, in noisy parties, in gossip about lovers, in prolonged sessions with her girl friends, where they learned to smoke and talked about male business, and where they once got their hands on some cane liquor and ended up naked, measuring and comparing the parts of their bodies."This quote pretty much sums it up.
We then learn that Amaranta is still angry tat Rebecca, even after all these years. She wants Rebecca to die before her. We find out that once she finishes her shroud she will die. So the day approaches and she receives letters from all over Macondo. The letters are from people who want her to send them up to their own loved ones that have passed away. Amaranta is not scared of dying. After so many years Amaranta finally dies.
Later on we find out that Meme is falling for a man named Mauricio. He works is a mechanic who always smells like grease, but Meme does not care she truly likes the man. They secretly go out, until one day Fernanda found out that her daughter was having intercourse with him while she was showering. So Fernanda orders the guards to kill who ever tries to trespass. Unfortunately Mauricio is shot in the spinal chord and he dies a few days later.

THEMES

Death- Death is a reocurring theme. Mauricio dies and most importantly Amaranta.

Resent- I dont know if resent can even be theme but the fact that Amaranta hates Rebecca so much is an example of resent, I think...??

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

MAGICAL REALISM

"Their snorting of a many-headed dragon filled the glow of noon with a pestilential vapor."
I don't know if Aureliano Segundo was comparing the horses to dragons or if they really had dragons.

When Aureliano Segundo was at the station and about three thousand people died and when he returned people told him that, that never happened. This is magical realism because he had the blood on his shirt and face.

QUOTES

"She was still thinking about Mauricio...she would lkeep thining about him for all the days of hrel ife utnil the remote autumn morning when she died of old age..."

The scene was actually quite sad, I truly felt sympathy toward Meme.

" 'It's as if the world were repeating itself.' "

This quote suggests that the whole book is cyclical.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

We had not heard of Jose Arcadio Segundo in a while until now. He turned out to be the leader of the rebellion against the banana plantation. He felt that they were treated unfairly. Then, out of nowhere we find Jose Arcadio in the station and he is being fired at. But then somehow it turned out to be a farce. So all in all Jose Arcadio turned out to be a leader.

PLOT SUMMARY

The chapter starts off with an update on what Fernanda did to Meme. Fernanda sent Meme to a hospital and she never spoke ever again. She was just so upset after Mauricio died.
When we hear that Fernanda returned back to Macondo on a train that was filled with soldiers we know that something bad is happening. The deal is that the banana plantation workers were on strike. They demanded that they have more rights. At the head of this strike was Jose Arcadio Segundo.
Then for some reason there were aobut three thousand people at the station and fourteen soldier fired at the people. It was all real. Jose Arcadio managed to flee on a train that was full of corpses. When he walked back to Macondo all the people told him that nothing of the sort had happened in Macondo. That was all weird because Jose Arcadio was present when it all ocurred. Then one day several soldiers when looking for hoodlums in th Buendia house, so Santa Sofia de la Piedad hid Jose 2nd in Melquiades' room. The soldiers did not spot him and at that point Jose knew that the war was over. Jose decided to live in that room.

QUOTES

War- Although I don't really know what happened in this chapter I do still believe that war is a major theme because some people of Macondo were killed.

Death- Meme dies in the hospital.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

MAGICAL REALISM

The only magical realism that ocurred in this chapter was the fact that it rained for four straight years nonstop. I don't think that's possible..is it???

QUOTES

" ' I'm only waiting for the rain to stop in order to die.' "

Ursuala tells this to Aureliano Segundo. I felt bad when she said this because she is going to die and she was one of the first characters in the book. It was quite sad that she is wanting to die and no one cares.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
In this chapter we see a little development form Aureliano Segundo because he was staying with Fernanda while it rained. He does repairs and he sees his animals drowned.
Ursula is very old now and she simply wants to die, she wants to die when the rain stops.

PLOT SUMMARY

The chapter starts off by telling us that the rain that Mr. Brown brought upon the people lasted "four years, eleven months, and two days." While it rained Aureliano Segundo stayed at home with Fernanda and Ursula. While he was a at home he made as many repairs as possible, all while yearning to see Petra. All of Macondo was in ruins because of the rain. The houses were destroyed and there were pieces of furniture floating outside. The banana company was abandonded because it was ruined in the long storm. When it stopped raining Ursula was so desperate to die because it was her time and she was only a toy to the kids. Aurliano Segundo returned to Petra after the rain had cleared and he found all of his animals dead except for a skinny mule.

THEMES

Devastation- The town of Macondo was devastated because of the horrible storm.

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

MAGICAL REALISM

""a pod of schi peas fell downa ndt h beans lay onthe groudn ina perfect geometricl patterin int he shape ofa starfish,m and one night she saw a row of luminous orange diskd pass across the sky."
Magical realism because how can the beans fall intoa perfect geometrical pattern?

The fact that birds just kept dying for no reason.

QUOTES

"they found her dead on the morning of good friday"
This was acutally quite devastating because Ursula died and it was actually quite sad because she was the oldest and one of the first charactres presented in the book.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

In this chapter we see Aureliano Segundo developing the most because he working so hard so that he can send little Amaranta Ursual to Brussels. It is all useless because he is dying.

PLOT SUMMARY

The chapter starts off with Ursula bine persistent on wanting to die. Now that the rain had stopped for some time now she was more than ready to die. In the meantime she cleaned up the house a bit. She tried to restore everything.
Int he meantime we hear that Aureliano Segundo is libing with Petra again. They start up a new business of raffling off animals. It was not a huge success because ht money would go to Fernanda for unnecissary items. They realized that Fernanda was the daughter they had alwayss wanted but never had.
After all this had occurred Ursula died, she died on "the morning of Good Friday." It was said that not many people attended the fneral because no one remembered her. After the death of Ursula many birds died. The priest said ti was because a monster was in town. So the people of Macondo set up traps to catch this monster and they did, it was a green hairy greasy looking thing. The people ended up hanging it on a tree. A few days later Rebecca died.
In the meantime Jose Arcadio taught Mem' son how to dot everythign.
Later on everone int he town makes fun of Aureliano Segundo becase he is dying. Lastly, out of nowher the twins die.

THEMES

DEath. Ursuala dies and the twins too

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

MAGICAL REALISM

The simple fact that Aureliano is talking to Melquiades in Melquiades' room is magical realism because Melquiades has been dead for a very long time now.

"Fernanda got the impression taht the house was filling up with elves." Fernanda sees plenty of things happening in the house. She sees things out of place and not in the proper order. This is magical realism because elves do not exist.

QUOTES

" 'So,' he said with a voice with a touch of razor in it, 'you're the bastard."

I believe this statement was really harsh especially coming from Jose Arcadio who is suppose to be a priest.

"The only thing that seemed to worry him in the rest of the house were the saints on the family altar, which he burned down to ashes..."

Again I'm quite shocked to hear this because he is supposed to be a priest.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

In this chapter we see the development of an uncle and his nephew, Jose Arcadio and Aureliano. Aureliano was used to living in Melquiades' room, he was a loner. When Jose Arcadio returned from Rome Jose treated Aureliano unfairly. Jose Arcadio would lavish himself with all kinds of imported items and eh would notshare it with Aureliano. Jose Arcadio would make young boys pamper him, which was quite disturbing to know. One day Aureliano was nice enough to go and get him some medicine and Jose Arcadio "let him free" about the house. They even bonded a little bit, until Jose Arcadio died, and that was when Aureliano realized that he was beginning ot love him.
PLOT SUMMARY

We righta way learn that Aureliano has been living in Melquiades' room. There he "learned by heart the fantastic legends of the crumbling book, they synthesis of the studies of Hermann the Cripple, the notes on the science of demonolgy, the keys to the philosopher's stone, the Centuries of Nostradamusand his research concerning the plague, so that he reached adolescence without knowing a thing about his own time." He only came out of the room to use the washroom or to eat. Aureliano would even talk to Melquiades' himself.
In the meantime Petra would send Fernanda moneya nd food. Even though Petra was starving she would send Fernanda everything she needed. I don' t truly understand why she did this, but it says it was her pride. In the meantime Santa Sophia de La Piedad was growing old. She was treated unfairly by the strict hand of Fernanda, and she could not take it anymore. She decided to go and live with one of her family members, but everyone knew that she had no family members.
When she left Fernanda felt the presence of elves. Things would get misplaced and out of order. She even thought it was Aureliano playing tricks on her, but it was not. She decided to lock him in Melquiades' room and Aureliano did not have it in him to escape, one could easily say he was a passive obedient boy. One day Aureliano found Fernanda lying on her bed looking beautiful, but she did not move because she was dead. A few days later her son returned from Rome and he locked up Aureliano again and he even offended him. I don't know if he was actually ordained because the book says that he came home once he read one of Fernanda's letters. All Jose Arcadio could think of was Amaranta.
Jose Arcadio was already living in the house for about a year. He sold a few things in order to eat. I would say he was a hypocrite because he played with the children and he preached lessons to the people. He did all this while remembering the torture that Ursula made him go through. The four eldest children that "played" at the Buendia house would pamper JoseArcadio. One night he and one of the boys found the gold that Ursula hid a long time ago. Jose Arcadio bought pleny of things, he even turned a little crazy because hs was naked with four other young boys. He realized that he was wront in doing those things so he whipped the boys and threw them out. He and Aureliano became closer, they actually spoke to each other because Aureliano was kind enough to go buy him som medicine for his asthma and Jose set him free in the house. One day while Jose was bathing the boys came in a drowned him, and Aureliano realized that he was acually feeling some love towards his uncle.

THEMES

Death- Death was going to be an obvious theme, it has been throughout the entire book. One generation of the Buendia's keeps dying one after the other. In this chapter FErnanda dies and this is what causes Jose Arcadio to come back to Macondo. Then he dies at the end of the chapter.

Solitude- Solitude is theme in this chapter because Aureliano has been the "loneliest" of all the Buendias. He literally has no interest in the outside world. He is lonely because he has no one that cares for him, because he is "bastard."

CHAPTER NINETEEN

MAGICAL REALISM

Honestly there is no magical realism in this chapter I think maybe the fact that Amaranta Ursula and Gaston made love on acid...but wouldn't that be dangerous?

The fact that Pilar Ternera is still alive and she is 140+ years old!!! We all know that is impossible.

QUOTES

" The encyclopedic coinsidence was the beginning of a great friendship."

I was quite happy to see that Aureliano finally made some friends! yay!

"Gaston's system seemed so perverse to him, but at the same timeso effective, that he ventured to warn Amaranta Ursula."

Aureliano at this point is thinking that Gaston is evil. He thinks that he he being submissive so that later on he can be controlling and demanding. Are Aureliano's suspicions true? Is Gaston simply fulfilling a plan? Is he deceiving Amaranta Ursula?

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

In this chapter we see Aureliano a long with his aunt, this time as opposed to his uncle, develop. Amaranta Ursula arrives from Brussels she has recently married. I am assuming she is about twenty five years old because her uhusband is fifteen years her senior and he is forty. I am assuming that Aureliano is about the same age because they used to play together when they were little. When Amaranta came home she only saw Aureliano as a brother, because it says that she gave him a sisterly embrace. She did not even consider him as someone to have feelings for because she was so deeply in love with her new husband. As the time passed by she took it upon herself to restore the house and Macondo. In the meantime Aureliano was growing more and more in love with Amaranta. In the beginning of the chapter he was still but his desires for Amaranta drove him to lose his virginity. At the end of the chapter he "forces" Amaranta to make love to him.

PLOT SUMMARY

Again we find Aureliano stuck in Melquiades' room studying parchements(sp). One day Amaranta Ursula arrives from Brussels with her husband Gaston who is interested in aviation. Marquez gives a brief account on how the couple met. Amaranta takes it upon herself to restore the mansion and to give some like the Macondo, the town she wanted to die in. Int he meantime Gaston tries to make Aureliano his friend but he cannot. He examines every insect there is in Macondo and he is still bored and wants to go to Belgium. He even starts to put in action his idea of airmail.
In the meantime Aureliano is falling for his own aunt Amaranta. He even starts suspecting that Gaston is thinking up a plan to control Amaranta. Again, I do not know if those suspicions are correct. In the end he practically tells Amaranta that he lusts for her, and she told him that she was going to leave. She did not follow through with her threat, instead she had intercourse with him.

THEMES

Incest- A major theme is incest which is intertwined with lust in this chapter. Aureliano lusts after his own aunt which is incest. This drives both of them to have intercourse.

Restoration- With Amaranta back in town Aureliano is in a sense rejuvinated because she brought a joy with her. The house is restored and Amaranta tries to reconstruct Macondo little by little.

CHAPTER TWENTY

MAGICAL REALISM

The fact that the child of Aureliano and Amaranta had a pig tail is magical realism.

The fact that the bookstore owner thought that elves where invading his space is magical realism because elves do not exist.

QUOTES

"The first of the line is tied to a tree and the last is being eatien by the ants."

Finally someone deciphered Melquiades' writings. How unfortunate it was that the whole line tried to decipher them and it was ironic that it told them how they would die, but they never could decipher it.

"...they knew that she was dead because of the flow had stopped...."

The death of Amaranta Ursula actually almost brought tears to my eyes. The fact taht they actually loved each other and the fact that they could not live any longer together was sad.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

In this chapter we see Amaranta's and Aureliano's love grow profoundly. They were truly in love and they made love everywhere. Even though they were poor and their house was falling apart their love remain strong. Even after the town was practically abandoned they knew that the only thing they needed to live was their love for each other. They were the only couple to actually truly love each other and have baby that was a fruit of true love.

PLOT SUMMARY

Aureliano and Amaranta are deeply in love and they have intercourse at all hours of the day. Aureliano gets the news that the bookstore owner is leaving and his only friends have left too. He is not so sad now, but that changes later when Amaranta dies. He really doesn't care that his friends left, he still manages to write to the bookstore owner. Gaston has left and he had promised to return but he did not. That made Aureliano a husband Amaranta. Later on we find out that Amaranta is pregnant. She has a baby boy with pig tail. Amaranta nor Aureliano thought this was abnormal because they had never heard Ursula tell her story. Unfortunately Amaranta bled to death after she gave birth to the child. Aureliano ws so upset that he forgot about the baby and the ants killed it. That was when Aureliano deciphered the many "parchments" that Melquiades had left. "The first of the line is tied to a tree and the last is being eaten by the ants." That exactly what happened and Aureliano uncovered many things he did not know about his ancestors. AT that moment he knew he would never leave Melquiades' room because when he finished deciphering the parchments the whole town of Macondo including himself would be wiped away.

THEMES

Death- The death of Amaranta Ursula drove Aureliano to decipher Melquiades' parchments.

Solitude- Aureliano is again lonely and with no one on earth who cares for him. This also drove him to decipher the parchments. Lastly the whole family had lived an entire century of solitude.

REFLECTIVE

I'm now on chapter seven, I feel like I haven't progressed at all! I have come to realize that Jose Arcadio Buendia is still under the chestnut tree up until this chapter. I still think that is disrespectful to him, since he founded Macondo. Why don't they just untie him??!! Like when I think about him, I wonder how does he shower? How does he change clothes? How can Ursula do this to her own husband? Why doesn't she just untie him for goodness sake??!!!!
As for Amaranta why doesn't she get married instead of molesting an innocent child? That whole passage caught my attention, but I thought it was nasty. Two gentlemen already proposed to her, and she liked them both, why didn't she say yes, instead of fooling around with a young confused teen?
3/16/07
What is even more riduculous is that in chpater nine Amarants rejects Marquqz as well!
Finally in chapter nine Aureliano surrendered, he realized that the war could not be won. It actually disappointed me that Aureliano tried to commit suicide. I'm pretty sure his father wouldn't have approved of that. Jose Sr. was a man who tried so hard and never gave up. Commiting suicide is like giving up on life. Jose Sr., even after he was tied up to that chestnut tree for years, did not give up.

ACTIVE READING PART2

CHAPTER SEVEN
MAGICAL REALISM

"Amost pulvarized at that time by the decrepitude of death, Prudencio Aguilar would come twice a day and chat with him."(page 152)

This is an example of magical realism because Prudecio Aguilar is dead, because Jose Arcadio Buendia Sr. himself killed him. Therefore Prudecio cannot talk to anyone because he is dead.

"...a light rain of tiny yellow flowers falling. They fell on the town all through the night in a silent storm, and they covered the roofs and blocked..."

This is an example of magical realism because flowers have never fallen from the sky and it is impossible

QUOTES

"Shut up in her bedroom, biting back her secret tears, Amaranta put her fingers in her ears..."

Amaranta is crying right after she said "no" to Gerineldo's proposal. I don't understand why she said no. It was her decision, so why is she crying?

"Colonel Gerineldo Marquez was not only the man closest to Colonel Aurelino Buendia, but Ursula receivec him as a member of the family."

This quote is very important because it shows how caring and nurturing Ursula is.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

In this chapter I think Aureliano has gone through the most changes as well as interactions. In chapter seven Aureliano falls prisoner, "as he was about to reach the western frontier disguised as an Indian witch doctor." He then is in prison for several days, because they have to execute him. He does not want to die there, so he asked that he may be executed in Macondo. All the soldiers were hesitant when it came to actually shooting him. They knew that the soldier who shot him, would receive death by the people of Macondo. Then his brother comes and saves him right before the execution. He then ends up back at home, and he finds himself writing poetry. Most importantly he realizes that he is fighting only for his pride.

SUMMARY

The chapter starts off with Aurelion getting captured. He is taken prisoner, and he is to be executed. Pilar one day read dealt the cards and the only thing she could tell him was that he should watch his mouth. One a lot of people passed around a cup of coffee, and they passed it to him as well. He became very ill because it had enough poison to kill a horse. He then told the soldiers that his last wish was to be executed in Macondo.
In the meantime Ursula takes in Sofia, Arcadio's lover, and her twins. She also takes in General Gerineldo, and he asks Amaranta to marry him and she says no. Ursula then received news from Aureliano that Jose Arcadio Buendia Sr. would die. Ursula then took him off of the chestnut tree and she brought him into the house. He smelled horrible. Ursula tried everything to get rid of that horrible stench. It was all pointless because Jose Arcadio Buendia Sr. ended up dying.

THEMES

Death- Again death is a major theme, especially in this chapter because the founder of Macondo dies. He was once a leader and after many longs years under that chestnut tree he finally died.

Disillusionment- Aureliano is so disillusioned with the war and with himself. He realizes that there is no point in fighting anymore.

CHAPTER EIGHT

MAGICAL REALISM

"Don't go out tonight." Pilar Ternera told ,Aureliano Jose, her son not to go out. She knew something bad was going to happen. This is magical realism because no one can predict the future.

There isn't specific magial realism examples in this chapter, but this would be a good time to question why or how the time changed so quickly. In the sense that when the book started there weren't even names for objects, it took place so long ago. Now, only a few years later, they have a theater and a sewing machine, how is that possible?

QUOTES

" 'This means he's come back.' "

Ursula was so excited that Gerneral Aureliano was returning. His return was actually quite disappointing because he wasn't the man Ursula used to know.

"He kept on examining her, discovering the miracle of her intimacy inch by inch, and he felt his skin tingle as he contemplated the way her skin tingled when it touched the water."

This quote caught my attention because I think it's disgusting that he likes a nasty withered old woman. Not only that, but she is his aunt!

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

In this chapter two characters developed into the unexpected. First, Aureliano Jose grows up and falls madly in love with, his aunt, Amaranta. He then goes off to war, and comes back even more in love with old Amaranta. He comes back with one mission in mind, to marry Amaranta. She refuses and he simply gives up on her. He then is killed.
His father Aureliano Buendia isn't really present at the beginning of the chapter because he is off at war. He comes back a different man. After that devastating realization that ocurred in chapter seven, I never expected him to come back they way he did.

SUMMARY
The chapter starts off with Aureliano Jose being a young adult now, perhaps in his late or midteen years. At first he notices that Amaranta, his aunt and woman who raised him, is growing old. He really doesn't like that her skin is wrinkled or that she is sagging. Once she started taking showers with Aureliano when he was much more mature, he realized that he liked her a lot. He would caress her and she would respond to his caresses. It was like two young teenagers in love. She then realizes that she has been doing with young Aureliano Jose is wrong. Aureliano JOse then leaves off to war. When he returns Amaranta and him exchange glances but she wants nothing with him. He gets over her and goes to Pilar's house. She warns him not to go out, but he does not listen and he dies.
After all this happens, seventeen children of Aureliano come to Macondo in hopes of getting baptized by Ursula. She and Amaranta baptize each and eeryone of them.
Then Colonel Aureliano Buendia arrives to Macondo and General Moncada was put in jail. The court marital decided that execution would be the best option even after Ursula and the other women asked that he live. The general's last wishes were that his jewelry be give to his wife.

THEMES

Death-Again is a major theme. We see Aureliano Jose die and Gerneral Moncada die as well.

Forbidden love- We see Amaranta fall in love with her own nephew. It is forbidden because of her fear of deformity and because they are related.

CHAPTER NINE

MAGICAL REALISM

When Ursula was boiling water and she opened the pot she magically saw worms

QUOTES

" 'Watch out for your heart, Aureliano...you're rotting alive.' "

Gerineldo Marquez told this to Aureliano. I think this is very important because it is true, he is not the man we all used to know

"Colonel Aureliano Buendia was insensible to the pleas for clemency."

Aureliano is not the man we used to know. He is nothing like his father who cared for the people.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

Everyone in this book seems to develop differently. Amaranta on the other hand does not seem to develop at all. At her age she should have already had a husband and various children. She simply ruined her life. She didn't want anything to do with Colonel Gerineldo Marquez. She just developed into an idiot, and I'm sorry for saying that but it's true. All she does is cry and cry, why does she cry when she is doing nothing to solve her problems? She should do something about her solitude or shut up.

SUMMARY

The chapter starts off with Aureliano acting weird. "Colonel Gerineldo Marquez limited himself then to just listenting, burdened by the impression that he was in telegraphic contact with a stranger from another world."After that Marquez focused on winning over Amaranta. "He summoned his reserves of persuasion, his broad and repressed tenderness, ready to give up for Amaranta a glory that had cost him the sacrifice of his best years." Amaranta did not seem to care about him at all.
After that Aureliano came back to Macondo and so did General Teofilo Vargas. His time in Macondo did not last long because he was shot. Two days later General Gerineldo Marquez was accused of high teason. He as to be killed but Ursula did not allow Aureliano to do so, she threatened Aureliano.
After Aureliano surrendered he shot himself right in the chest. Luckily he did not damage any vital organs so he lived.

THEMES

Sympathy-Sympathy is shown by tow of the main characters in this book. Ursula felt sympathy for Gerineldo Marquez. Aureliano felt sympathy towards Marquez and he didn't kill him because of it.

Love-Gerineldo Marquez feels love toward Amaranta so he wants to marry her.

CHAPTER TEN

MAGICAL REALISM

"one day when Santa Sofia de la Piedad gave one of thema glass of lemonade and as soona as he tasted it the tother one said that it needed sugar."

This is magical realism because that is impossible.

" 'Hello, young man,' said Melquiades."

This is an example of magical realism because Melquiades is dead.

QUOTES

"It was as if the defects of the family and none of the virtues had been concentrated on both"

This is important because no one will name their kids after the Buendia's any longer. The name has brought only deception.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

Ursula is now one-hundred years old. She is "on the point of going blind from cataracts, she still had her physical dynamism, her intergrityof character, and her mental balance intact." She has developed the most in the book. She is still caring of her family and strangers.

PLOT SUMMARY

In this chapter Aureliano has "gone to waste." In the sense that he is useless. The twins are now grown and nothing alike. One likes cockfighting while the other wasted his time with the accordion.
In the meantime Remdedios the Beauty is making men die because of the beauty. Everyone thought that Remedios the Beauty was retarded but Aureliano suggested thats she was highly intelligent.

THEMES

Identity- In this chapter the twins cannot distinguish themselves and nor can anyone else.

Purity- Remedios cannot be seen by any men in the town, therefore she remains pure.

ACTIVE READING

CHAPTER 1 3/9/2007 8:30 PM
MAGICAL REALISM

-This book takes place so long ago that everything on Earth did not have a name. The fact that Melquiades, the gypsy, out of nowhere came up with these huge magnets seems like a magical element. "He went from house to house dragging two metal ingots and everybody was amazed to see pots, pans, tongs and braziers tumble down..."

-Jose Arcadio Buendia exchanged magnets for a magnifying glass. The fact that he wanted to use this for solar war is an example of magical realism.

-The fact that Jose Arcadio Buendia tries to produce more gold. That is magical because no one can make gold.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

Jose Arcadio Buendia is introduced to the reader in the first chapter. His wife, Ursula, sees Jose is really stubborn. I think Buendia is a man who is trying to gain as much knowledge as he can. He is willing to take risks to gain wisdom. This is very admirable to me. He tries to make some more gold by mixing it with other elements. He kept buying everything that Melquiades brought forth to him. "Jose Arcadio Buendia...was the most enterprising man ever to be seen in the village, had set up the placement of the houses in such a way that from all of them one could reach the river and draw water with the same effort, and he had lined up the streets with such good sense that no house that no house got more sun that another during the hot time of day." All in all Jose is working and gaining knowledge to better his community.

PLOT SUMMARY

The chapter starts off with telling the reader about Macondo. "At the time Macondo was a village of twenty adobe houses, built on the bank of a river of clear water that ran along a bed of polished stones, which were white and enormous, like prehistoric eggs." In Macondo gypsies come and display some new inventions and Jose Arcadio Buendia is always there to purchase all of them. In chapter one Jose Arcadio Buendia buys a magnifying glass and tries to produce gold.
When Ursula found out that Jose Arcadio Buendia was trying to mix some elements with the "colonial coins" she gave in, she didn't want to argue with Jose. "Ursula's precious inheritance was reduced to a large piece of burnt hog cracklings that was firmly stuck to the bottom of the pot." Ursula was so upset that when the gypsies returned to Macondo she put the people against them.
The author then goes on to tell us that Jose was the "semi-leader" of Macondo.
We then find out that Ursula and Jose have two children, Jose Jr. and Aureliano. Jose Jr. is the very curious type and he is very large. While Aureliano is the smaller and smarter one. After that the gypsies come to town again and they introduce ice to Jose.

QUOTES

" A person does not belong to a place until there is someone dead under the ground."

-This quote may not be of any importance, but I really like this quote because it shows that the people of Macondo mean a lot to Jose. He is saying that no one will ever be forgotten even though they are dead. This quote maybe is foreshadowing something.

" The child, perplexed, said from the doorway, 'It's going to spill'. "

"The child" in this quote is Aureliano. This quote simply tells us of what kind of child Aureliano is, and the man he is going to be.

THEMES

-Yearning for Knowledge- Jose Arcadio Buendia is always trying to gain knowledge. Like mentioned before he tried to produce gold, he bought a magnifying glass, telescope and in this chapter he is looking forward to the ice that Melquiades brought forth.

-Exploration- Exploration is an important theme in chapter one, because the reader is told that Macondo was founded. Jose Arcadio Buendia also wants to explore new things and gain new knowledge.

CHAPTER 2
MAGICAL EXPLORATION

In chapter two Ursula tells us about her relative that had a pig tail. This is definitely magical realism because the author took the idea that incest creates deformity and really applied it to a person. Because of the incest that is going on the relative has a pig tail.

In chapter two Jose Arcadio Buendia kills Prudencio Aguilar for making fun of him for not having sex. After that Ursula "...went out to get some water and she saw Prudencio Aguilar by the water jar. He was livid, a sad expression on his face, trying to cover the hole in his throat with a plug made of esparto grass. It did not bring on her fear, but pity." This is magical realism because Ursula is seeing a ghost and ghosts do not exist.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

In this chapter Jose Arcadio Buendia Jr., Jose Arcadio Buendia's eldest son, is introduced. In this chapter we find out that Jose Arcadio Jr. has an enormous out of this world male sex organ. His mother thought that it was because of the incest that was going on between Jose Arcadio Buendia Sr. and herself. Because of the lack of the attention that Jose Sr. gives his children, Jose Arcadio Buendia Jr. is getting involved with Pilar Ternera. At age fourteen Jr. is having sex with a much older woman. His curiosity has been put into action. After Pilar gets pregnant Jr. decides to have sex with a young gypsy girl and he runs off with her. He has developed into a careless young man because of his father.

PLOT SUMMARY

Jose Arcadio Buendia and Ursula are cousins. We are then told that one of Ursula's relative's had a pig tail because of the incest. Because of this Ursula is afraid that Jr. may be deformed because of his large sex organ.
The chapter flashes back a little bit. We are told that Jose Sr. killed a man named Prudencio Aguilar because he ridiculed him for not yet having sex with Ursula. After that Ursula saw Prudencio all around the house, and as mentioned before this is an example of magical realism.
After long hours of work Jose Arcadio Buendia, with some formulas that Melquiades gave Jose Sr., he was able to extract Ursula's gold from the other elements he mixed it with. After he succeeded he showed his eldest son and he said it looked like "dog shit." This really upset Jose Arcadio Sr. and he punched him across the face. This is somewhat an example of the lack of attention that Jose Sr. show his children. Before this Jose Jr. has been provoked by Pilar and he sneaks out at night to have sex with her. One night he decides to tell his younger brother Aureliano. All of a sudden we are informed that Pilar is pregnant, and since Jose Jr. cannot handle the responsibility he runs off with a gypsy girl and is never to be found.
Since Ursula was so worried about her son she went to search for him and in the meantime Jose Sr. stayed with the children with the help of some women. Ursula failed to find Jose Jr. but she succeeded in finding the long searched for route to the sea.

QUOTES

"... Ursula went into the room where he was undressing to go to bed, she felt a mingles sens of shame and pity: he was the first man that she had seen naked after her husband, and he was so well-equipped for life that he seemed abnormal. "

-This quote is perhaps not important at all. I think it was very hilarious. She saw her own son naked and she saw his enormous sex organ. Ursula went as far as to go to the card reader and ask her about her sons enormous "gift." The woman simply said that he was lucky and gifted.

" 'What does it look like to you?' Jose Arcadio answered sincerely:
'Dog Shit.'
His father gave him a blow with the back of his hand that brought out blood and tears."

-Jose Arcadio Buendia Sr. is asking Jose Arcadio Jr. what he thinks of the gold that he extracted from the other elements and Jose Jr. answers rudely. This is just an example of how Jose Sr. doesn't care for his children, because he hits them until they bleed.

THEMES

Loss- In this chapter loss is an important them because the Buendia's lost their son. They lost him to gypsies because of their carelessness. Jose Jr. loses his family as well because he decides to run away.

Adventure- In this chapter adventure is a theme because Jose Arcadio Jr. is having an adventure with Pilar. Not only that Aureliano is living the adventure along with him because Jose Jr. tells him of it. This is an adventure for Pilar as well. When the Buendia's find out that Jose Jr. ran away Ursula has an adventure all on her own because she searches for him and finds a long looked for route.

CHAPTER THREE
MAGICAL ELEMENTS

When little Rebecca who goes under the care of the Buendia's she bring the whole town of Macondo an insomnia plague. The fact that no one can sleep or remember anything in the whole town is magical because it's unreal.

The fact that Jose Arcadio Buendia burns mercury for two days after the death of Melquiades is magical realism. He burns the mercury so that Melquiades can rise from the dead. We all know that this is impossible so it is an example of magical realism.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

In this chapter we see little development from Aureliano. Aureliano is now a grown man and has not found a woman. He does not develop into the man we all thought he would. In the sense that his father and brother were "lucky" with women. In this chapter Aureliano encounter a "adolescent mulatto girl" he pays twenty cents to sleep with her. He feels "tormented by shame." When she left he tried to find her but it was too late, she was already gone. At the end of the chapter Aureliano experiences love at first sight when he sees Remedios, the nine-year old daughter off the magistrate. All in all his timidness has led him to love a child.

PLOT SUMMARY

The chapter starts off with Pilar giving birth to Jose Jr.'s son. The Buendia's then take in to their home a little girl named Rebecca, who eats dirt. After many years the children are all grown up and Ursula realizes that the house needs to be a little bigger, so she decides to pay some people to expand it. The Buendia's then receive a letter that says that they have to paint their house a certain color. Jose ARcadio Buendia is infuriated by this so he decides to go and drive him out of Macondo. The Magistrate decides to leave, but he later returns with some guards that are willing to kill Jose Arcadio Buendia. After long discussion, the magistrate decides to give in to the rules of Macondo. He then finds a house and decides to stay there. Aureliano, Jose Arcadio's son, falls in love with the Magistrates youngest daughter, who is nine years old. I feel as though Aureliano is confused because he hasn't been with many women. In this chapter prior to meeting Remedios, he sleeps with a young mulatto girl. After he sleeps with her he automatically has feeling for her, he wants to marry her right away. At the end of this chapter Aureliano feels horrible for liking a nine-year old child.

QUOTES

"It was never established whether it was the rhubarb or the beatings that had effect, or both of them together, but the truth was that in a few weeks Rebecca began to show signs of recovery."

This quote jumps up at me because I think it's horrible that Ursula hit a child that was not hers. Then again as horrible as it sounds, I do think violence is an option when kids are misbehaving. I don't necessarily a child has to be beaten everyday, but only when they are seriously misbehaving they should receive some sort of spanking.

"Defeated by those practices of consolation, Jose Arcadio Buendia then decided to build the memory machine that he had desired once in order to remember the marvelous inventions of the gypsies."

This quote is quite funny if you think about it. He doesn't remember anything, not even the names of simple objects. He couldn't even remember what a cow was, or what it's use is. How is he planning to build a machine to remember gypsies, when he can't remember simple objects.

THEMES

Loneliness- Loneliness is an important them in this chapter because Aureliano is already a grown man and he cannot find a woman. He feels so lonely that he sleeps with Pilar. He is so frustrated that he even pays for sex.

Frustration- Frustration is a theme in this chapter because Aureliano is frustrated that he cannot find a woman. Jose Sr. is frustrated because he cannot take a picture of God, so he turns crazy.

CHAPTER FOUR

MAGICAL REALISM

When Jose Arcadio Buendia turned a little crazy and he started destroying the lab it took twenty one men to hold him down. This is magical because no it's unreal that it took twenty one men to stop this one.

When Jose Arcadio Buendia is turning crazy, he calls out to the dead. "Calling to Prudencio Aguilar, to Melquiades, to all the dead, so that they would share his distress." This is magical realism because the dead won't share his distress, because they are dead.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

In this chapter we see the development of the three siblings: Aureliano, Rebecca and Amaranta.
Aureliano who is in love with the nine-year old Remedios finally gets engaged to her. He is no longer the "woman-less" man. Rebecca also falls in love. She falls in love with, "Pietro Crespi [who] was young and blond, the most handsome and well-mannered man who had ever been seen in Macondo, so scrupulous in his dress that in spite of the suffocating..."She has developed from a dirt-eating girl to a woman. She, like her older brother Aureliano is engaged. Amaranta the youngest of the three has developed into a selfish and careless sister. She is so envious that her sister is getting married to Pietro Crespi that she wants to kill her.

PLOT SUMMARY

In this chapter Ursula plans a dance to inaugurate the new white house. Along with this new house came a pianola that needed to be assembled by an Italian expert named Pietro Crespi. Both Amaranta and Rebecca fall in love with this man. Pierto Crespi only has eyes for Rebecca. Amaranta is infuriated by this and she threatens to kill Rebecca so many times. Rebecca is very frightened, and Ursula sees this, so she takes Ursula on a trip to keep her away from Rebecca and Pietro Crespi.
In the meantime Aureliano seeks Remedios. He passes by her house and yearns to get a glimpse of her. Aureliano tells Jose Arcadio Buendia of this, and he goes and asks for the hand Remedios for him. Moscote accepts, so the wedding is on. The only problem is that Remedios has not hit puberty yet.
While that is occurring Jose Arcadio Buendia tries to build a pendulum machine that will help men fly. I believe that it was Melquiades, through a vision, that told Jose Arcadio Buendia that "it was impossible because a pendulum could lift anything into the air but it could not lift itself." This infuriated Jose Arcadio Buendia. Jose Arcadio Buendia began to destroy all the laboratory equipment. Twenty-one men had to hold him down, they ended up tying him to a tree. When Ursula and Amaranta returned from their trip she untied his wrists and ankles, and she "built him a shelter of palm branches to protect him form the sun and rain."

QUOTES

"'Well,' Aureliano said. 'Tell me what it is.'
Pilar Terena bit her lips with a sad smile.
'That you'd be good in war,' she said. 'Where you put your eye, you put your bullet.'"

This quote is very important because Pilar is telling Aureliano that he is going to be a father. I think Pilar said what she had to say in a clever way. I think he "put" his "eye" on her, she was his interest. His "bullet" was the child he helped her create. In other words he left his mark with the "bullet."

"Amaranta felt humiliated and told Pietro Crespi with a virulent anger that she was prepared to stop her sister's wedding even if her own dead body had to lie across the door."

This quote is important because it is an example of the lengths Amaranta is willing to go to make her own sister miserable. I feel that this is outrageous because I would never say anything of the like to a person who is so close to me.

THEMES

Jealousy- Jealousy is an important theme in this chapter because Amaranta is jealous of Rebecca. She is so jealous that she is willing to kill her.

Revenge- In this chapter Amaranta wants to kill her sister because Pietro Crespi wants to marry Rebecca.

CHAPTER FIVE

MAGICAL REALISM

When Jose Arcadio Jr. arrived everyone thought it was an earthquake. This is magical realism because no person can cause an earthquake.

The way in which Remedios died is magical realism to me because I don't think broth can explode in the intestines just like that.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

There is a lot going on in this chapter. The one who we all thought would be the "nobody" turned out to be the leader of Macondo. Aureliano the quiet and lonely man developed into a leader. This was so unexpected because he always was a follower.

PLOT SUMMARY

The chapter starts off with the wedding of Aureliano and Remedios. Aureliano was so nervous that he kept dropping the wedding ring. Remedios' mother and sisters were afraid that Remedios would ruin the wedding ceremony, but Remedios behaved well. When the cake was distributed Remedios gave a slice to Jose Arcadio Buendia, who was still tied to the tree. I'm assuming she had some compassion. Pietro Crespi and Rebecca were suppose to get married that same day but Pietro Crespi did not make it in time, so their wedding was postponed.
The chapter then introduces Father Nicanor Reyna. He decides that he will start building a church in Macondo. The church is to be completed in three years. So that means that Rebecca and Pietro Crespi will have to wait three years until they can get married. In the meantime Rebecca is terrified of the things Amaranta will do to her.
While all this is occurring Jose Arcadio Buendia is still tied to the tree. While he is tied to the tree he speaks Latin with Father Nicanor. Everyone had thought that Jose Arcadio Buendia was just speaking "gibberish."
When there was only three months left until the wedding Pietro Crespi could not wait any longer, so he gave Father Nicanor the money so that he could finish the church. Amaranta decided that it would be best if she ruined Rebecca's dress. Fortunately Amparo Moscote fixed Rebecca's dress.
Amaranta prayed that something would hinder the wedding. Her prayers were answered, and so Remedios died. Aureliano was so sad because he had grown to love her dearly. She had proved everyone wrong, she turned out to be a very good wife.
After that Jose Arcadio Jr. returned. Jose Jr. and Rebecca fell in love, so they married. Pietro Crespi ended up marrying Amaranta. In the meantime Aureliano spent some time with his father-in-law who was a Conservative. Aureliano believes that deep inside he, himself, is a Liberal. Later on war broke out in Macondo and Aureliano became an advocate of the Liberals.

QUOTES

" 'Not madness,' Aureliano said. 'War. And don't call me Aurelito anymore. Now I'm Colonel Aureliano Buendia.' "

This quote is very important because Aureliano is basically saying that he is not the man he once was. He is now a leader and not a follower.

"...appeared in Riohacha with bottles of pills that were nothing but refined sugar and a diploma from the University of Leipizig that he had forged himself."

This quote is not important, but I thought it was hilarious. The fact that he just made himself a diploma, and everyone knows about it, but they still see him as the town doctor is awkward.

THEMES

Death- Death is an important theme in this chapter because Remedios died. Also, because war has begun and war only means one thing, death.

Incest-Rebecca and Jose Arcadio Buendia are having sexual relations. They are not biologically brother and sister but they practically are.

CHAPTER SIX

MAGICAL REALISM

The only magical realism I can think of in this chapter is when Aureliano shoots himself and he doesn't even get hurt. This may seem unreal, but it's the only magical thing that was in this chapter.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

In this chapter Aureliano has seventeen children with seventeen different women. His is at risk of dying every moment he lives. He developed from a "woman-less" man into a man with plenty of women.
Arcadio, the son of Jose Arcadio Jr. develops into a corrupt leader. He kills people ruthlessly. He even wants to have sex with his own mother. Pilar Ternera, the town whore, had more dignity than him, because she denied his proposal. Later on he has sex with Santa Sofia de Piedad. He has one nameless child with her, and another is on the way. At the end of the chapter he surrenders and he is killed.

PLOT SUMMARY

The chapter starts off with an update of what Aureliano has been up to . He is now the "Commander in Chief of the revolutionary forces, with jurisdiction and command from one border to the other, and the man most feared by the government." Aureliano had to leave to join the forces of General Victorio Medina and he left Arcadio, his nephew, in charge of Macondo. Under the leadership of Arcadio, the town of Macondo went through some hard times. Arcadio was the most corrupt leader Macondo had ever seen. He killed people ruthlessly, he almost killed Ursula, his grandmother.
All this chaos made Ursula devastated and ashamed that Arcadio carried the "Buendia" name. One day she grabbed a whip and whipped some sense into Arcadio. After that, she "ordered the revival of Sunday mass" and Pietro Crespi donated a few things to the church. She grew very fond of Pietro Crespi, and she accepted the fact that her daughter, Aramanta, would one day marry him. When the day actually came when Pietro Crespi asked Amaranta she said, "don't be simple, Crespi...I wouldn't marry you even if I were dead."When Amaranta told this to Pietro Crespi he became miserable. He decided that suicide would be the only option, so he slit his wrists. When he died Amaranta did not even care. Ursula, on the other hand, was devastated and she herself buried him.
Arcadio was at first unwilling to surrender but the when he saw that his death was inevitable he gave in. He was shot to death.

QUOTES
" 'Don't be simple, Crespi.' She smiled. 'I wouldn't marry you even if I were dead.' "

Amaranta says this to Pietro Crespi after he asks for her hand in marriage. i truly don't understandwhy she debnied. She had "chased" him for so long, and for her to not accept his proposal is confusing.

"He shot himself in the chest with a pistol and the bullet came out through his back without damaging any vital organ."

I don't understand why a person would fire a gun at themself without the intention of killing themself. So then what was the intention of Aureliano?

THEMES

Death- is definitely a theme in this chapter because Arcadio and Pietro Crespi both die. The war also causes many deaths in the town of Macondo.

War-is definitely a theme in this book because the whole town of Macondo is suffering because of this war.
